Oh, But Camp Is Splendid!

The Old Ranger was cleaning the Orion Cabin because the largest group of campers was coming to camp.  It was not all drudgery of sweeping and washing.  There was a wonderful surprise.  Moving a piece of wood off the floor she found a quiet, coiled "rubber boa." The snake had found a comfy spot to sleep.  The Old Ranger gently encouraged it outdoors.

Later that evening, she had to walk back to Orion Cabin.  It was dark and the moon was rising over the ridge among the trees.  The stars of the Big Dipper were framed by trees on either side of the road.  Then a bright shooting star appeared over the creek drawing a bright trail all the way across the sky to disappear behind the hill.  A Perseid Meteor!  The Old Ranger actually said, "WOW!"  She thought how lucky she was to spend time at Camp El-O-Win.

It was a week of splendors and surprises.  Over in Chippewa, across the creek, the Old Ranger observed three juncos on the ground by the tepee nearest the fire circle.  One of the black-hooded birds chipped and flew several feet away.  Its white tail feathers flashed.  The smaller young junco followed chipping and flashing its white tail feathers too.  The third bird joined in the flight.  What a thrill to watch some of the most common birds a Camp.

Starry skies, little snakes and families of birds.  Camp El-O-Win is a splendid place!
